Been thinking on this. Indeed so much is taken away from bi people. Voices blocked, experiences erased, funding throttled, identity elided. Bi people and therefore bi culture cannot flourish under these ills, but luckily I think bi culture cannot actually be taken away.https://twitter.com/we_are_biscuit/status/1271468898530070529 …

To begin with, bi culture starts in someone's mind.https://twitter.com/_awbery_/status/1271835426957832192 …

Bi people "fluidify" the monosexual culture they are presented with. I think this is most beautifully revealed in "shipping" - imagining a fictional character is in a relationship with another fictional character. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipping_(fandom) …

Although perhaps the first example of shipping was between Kirk and Spock, shipping is not exclusive to queer people (of course!) but I think it's a very common habit of mind for many bisexual people when they interface with wider culture.

When bi people are lucky enough or strong enough to come together online and especially irl, fandom, shipping & tumblr are a huge touchpoint for strangers to bond over. Each year at UK BiCon there is a new craze that many bi people have spontaneously become obsessed over.

Firefly, Loki from Marvel and Stephen Universe have all been favourites at BiCon and of course, the ever present myth of a man, Captain Jack Harknesspic.twitter.com/OML6PzS8XV

We've got the bi flag (even if we had to tussle to keep it recently). We've got the bi color (purple). We've repurposed our own madeup slur into our spirit animal (unicorn). We've got CAKE. And sure we make jokes like bisexuals can't sit on chairs, but that is our culture too.

Noone can "take" those things from us because they *are* us, it's in our past, in our present, it's inside our minds, it exists privately between us, bisexuals, stuff other people simply can't understand. It's stuff that, ha ha, just won't go away, no matter how hard "they" try.
