For these purposes a good example is Drum n Bass, fine with the name but in practice it has a more specific meaning than the name itself implies

Dubstep. Not a bad name but people tend to take it too literally as a portmanteau, and there's a lot of crap under it as an umbrella.

interesting how experimental is often a catch-all for anything outside of existing genre templates. much of my favorite music defies categorization. ofc, all music is influenced by other music. nevertheless boundary pushing.
