Megaliths in Europe mostly aren't behind fences, no visitors centre or tourist shop, so you can just walk up and touch something so ancient every shred of its meaning has been lost - just as a Roman soldier probably did when he saw it for the first time

As far as I know it’s pretty much the only one behind a fence probably because it’s the most famous. Nearby Avebury is open to roampic.twitter.com/hMLan1GEg4
My personal fave is Stanton Drew which has a little honesty box attached to a fence for donations to the National Trust
