I just had this exchange with Amazon. Me: When I watch shows that have people speaking in other languages than English, the subtitles on the screen showing what they are saying in English are blocked out by captioning posting things like (Speaking in Spanish)
Is there an example of anyone who does this well? If so I wonder how they do it? Subtitles and captions clashing does seem like a kinda hard problem, especially if they are encoded separately (eg distrubtor vs platform). I'm a front end web dev and interested.

Not that I can think of off the top of my head. I remember Netflix and Hulu also doing the same thing. I'm trying to think of the other services.

I'm fairly certain that the distributor handles the subtitles and the platform handles the captioning, which I think is part of the problem.
