You don't *have* to care about people's feelings (including your own) but is it not better to do that than to disregard them? It's generally better to have compassion for people as opposed to apathy in my opinion, even in purely self-interested terms.

You have to know how to use the tool, it has to be a realistic option, which takes practice. Also I disagree, I’d say not caring about other people’s feelings applies to at least 80% of people 100% of the time and to the remaining 20% of people about 50% of the time.
