Yes they are. The crews are all volunteers but they have a number of paid positions eg engineers. They have a very good hotel at their trading centre in Poole and you can stay there if there are no courses running. No govt funds at all.

Let's hope that there was nobody on board with an inappropriate mug in their cupboard back at base. Heroes all.
