When people say something “in and of itself” my mind scrambles to work out why both, and what each means, and I don’t hear anything else they say. It’s a problem in and of itself.

Describing something as “ass-backwards” (meaning rubbish) - asses are on the back, therefore if they’re facing backwards, the thing itself is likely pointing forwards
