Every time the you can't untag people in threads bug comes up I have to re-explain to people that yes many things that look almost identical to it work, it's just this one really specific thing that @Twitter have arbitrarily decided should be broken when everything like it works.

So for example when I tag
@jack into this thread like this, he is automatically tagged in to the rest of the thread, and none of the main Twitter clients let me untag him.1 reply 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread -
This is because replying to yourself to continue a thread has a completely different UI to replying to other people. When *you* reply to this thread, it's easy for you to untag
@jack, but I can't do so.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -
This is true regardless of who I tag in when in the thread. If I were to casually mention
@TwitterSupport in the middle of this thread like this just because they had something useful to say (unlikely) then they're stuck hearing all the rest of this thread. Terrible shame.1 reply 0 retweets 5 likesShow this thread -
Fortunately there is, for now, a workaround, which is that https://tweetdeck.twitter.com treats threading more like normal replies. It seems to be getting gradually worse so I don't know how long it will keep working - you have to click through a bunch of things to do it.

This whole thing is especially frustrating because literally everyone who uses threads will forget that this bug exists because it's so stupid and arbitrary, and because the fact that you have triggered it is hidden from you - you can't actually see who is @-ed into your thread.

And it has AFAICT been like this essentially as long as the relevant features have existed, and
@Twitter just DGAF because it probably drives engagement or something.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -

And even in replies, when I reply to this thread on my phone, I also can’t I untag the people in the thread. Only chance is on desktop replies.

I think you can? Depends on your app maybe but works fine on official android - just click on the usernames in "replying to"

It's definitely one of those features that is only obvious when you know the answer
