agree it's for the purpose of civilisation-enhancing (or perhaps more plainly for large-group-enchancing) ends... and I don't necessarily like the small p patriarchal nature of transmission of some of the norms, but disagree that it's always necessarily at personal cost.

Oh, not always, not necessarily but I'd guess most are (drive left means you can't drive right and vice-versa but also means you get to your destination if everyone does the same)
