I would often quiz my parents about some belief that seemed false to me. If I drove the questions too deep, a strange seizure-like expression would overtake their faces, and their minds would freeze up.

I have seen that happen in many people. Cognitive dissonance overload switch perhaps?
I feel like I’ve seen it too. Seems like a shut down or pressure shunt. But maybe it’s the opposite, maybe it’s the face of actually thinking for the first time in a long time, instead of just repeating stock answers.

Or maybe they deliberately chose to give up questioning because putting food on the table and maintainibg ties is more important than thinking
