For me the movies are about "lost children", something I identify with strongly. The main characters are children of parents who were just plain shitty or made bad decisions. The kids talking to each other about how to live life stabs at my heart.

I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see if Rey and Kylo make it into adulthood as mature people, despite their crappy start. Will they become better adults than their parents? Will Rey grow in skill despite only having books for guidance? Will Kylo mature into a balanced man?

Totally agree. I buy (or enjoy) the theory about it perfectly embodying the move from sole lone hero's journey narrative, good against evil (with a dash of shadow side) to a collaborative complex shades of grey picture.
