Web accessibility peeps advise that you actually shouldn’t do this by default when building web pages, because it overrides user settings. Some people have “open in same tab” set as default (idk why) but this gets overridden when forcing new tab. Apparently.

interesting. i know i am being a horatio but i can't imagine why someone would want that, especially in this case. i still think it might better way to set it up, but this will be good to keep in mind especially since i've been liberally making new tab links
