Have you heard about visually oriented concentration meditation practices? In particular staring intently at colored circles (“kasinas”) or candles, which turns into engaging with a mental “counterimage”.

I saw this stuff mentioned probably in Ingram’s “hardcore” book? And tried it and noticed it’s a really strong effect, different from breath concentration. For me it was pivotal in seeing what “concentration” is all about.

Huh! Potential tangent - when I was watching
@vervaeke_john's lectures, the way he distinguished between contemplation and meditation (scaling 'up/outwards' vs 'down/inwards') really struck a chord with me. Do you conflate the two intentionally? (https://youtu.be/jkWNBdBDyoE?t=1094 …) -
Not deliberate - I take them to be more or less synonymous. Will check out that episode!

This was a fun read. Makes me want to write about the hypnogogia experiments I did a couple of years back.

I was just about to mention to check out Shinzen. I think his curious, experimental and comparative eclecticism would interest you.

Haven't done this as an extended thing, but noticed since childhood that when I close my eyes I see something that I can best describe as grocery-store-aisles that are also made of neon-green-on-black spinning gears. Similar geometry to this, though not nearly as psychedelic:pic.twitter.com/ugMhoWlk7L

This is great. I suspect all the "formal" practices had as their preconditions something like these moments, which seem to me quite natural states we all lapse into from time to time. Then the key is just to lapse on purpose more often.
