I have a hunch that a lot of why statistics is confusing to people is that the applicability of any given statistical method is grounded in a notion of "reasonableness" that we don't know how to teach and barely acknowledge exists.

Kinda, yeah, though I think it holds up well divorced from the broader context of metarationality. I think this is obviously true of statistics, but many of the generalisations of it are less obviously true (and some might even be false).
