General: find what kind of pen you like (ink/gel/biro...) I love Biros and use a Parker brand but the cheap Bic ones are a joy too. Notebooks: avoid ringbound like the plague. Saddle stitched also not durable (staples) I have wavered between hard and soft cover for perfect bound.

Ringbound degrade fast so depends if you want durability. Some pages rip out even if you don’t want them to (with handling) and the rings get bent and warped, if the end ring gets bad enough every page starts falling off the top hole. I’m a diarist so durability important

No, as long as it's perfect bound soft cover it will do fine. I go for aesthetics in the moment. Cheaper ones always just as good as more expensive imo, branding just adds $ BUT if it makes you feel nice, its ok to pay money for.
