Because for all the other things that people do “just because...” like playing an instrument or making tiny figurines from blue tak - none of those people keep banging on about it on the internet

It seems reasonably plausible that meditation could be very useful while enlightenment is just a weird side effect / indicator of being very good at meditation rather than useful in and of its own right. (I'm rubbish at meditation, so this is solely a plausibility claim)
