I've thought twice about tweeting this publically, but I wrote it while I was kind of feverish and out of it this week, and I think it's worth sharing more widely http://files.howtolivewiki.com/.meditation_2015/towards%20a%20political%20economy%20of%20enlightenment.pdf … looking at the $ costs of enlightenement practice and what might/won't work to accelerate us.

Very interesting. But all those $s and all those years... but for what? What are the benefits of enlightment? Is it really worth it?

Thank you for replying. Re-Reading the original doc link, I see there is little mention of enlightenment being good for something. But overall it reads as if it’s saying we could /should support more people to be enlightened.

I’m with @leashless. Arguably there is no benefit to the individual. And considerable costs & risks I’d assign a non-zero probability that there’s benefits to •society• from small-r realized people (enlightened) but also really hard to suss out

Also this podcast interview is fascinating & insightful Interviewee had such a strong yearning to practice that he wanted to ask a prison warden to lock him up (interviewee would pay for food) in solitary confinement so he’d have a place to practicehttps://www.guruviking.com/guru-viking-interviews-ep6-lorin-roche-phd/ …

So high cost but negligible benefit. But if it’s just minority weirdo people wasting their money to get consciousness kicks... why write and publish a 6 page pdf on how to do it (more)(better)(cheaper)? Maybe just for fun I guess.

I think most of the people I know, directly I”R”L or at one digital remove, who are dedicated to the “quest”, aren’t in it for consciousness “kicks”. It seems more like some part of their own consciousness or their own unique deep nature •kicked them• into the quest

For some...maybe? For many, it’s more like, some people decide “I’m going to be an elite athlete. I’m going to sail around the world. I’m going to run a marathon every year.” Humans have these intense drives which don’t map either onto reproduction, status-seeking, or hedonism

So my original question all the way back there is why would @leashless who is an impact kind of guy, write a long document about how expensive it is to get enlightened, when he says it’s no more or less good for a person than sailing or running marathons?
