the reason we only have 80s Movie Part 25 now is not lack of originality but an excess of it - items of shared culture must be borrowed from a time when such things existed

good point! in general it seems like time got weird around then...
Having said that, I think we have an *emotional* culture going on right now. The MCU and LOTR reflect my emotional values back at me: specifically that strong men cry and are vulnerable. That hugs/touching are good. That friendship against the odds is important.
