What are some lifestyle choices or decisions you’ve made that most people would consider “unconventional”? — taking a different path, coloring outside the lines, etc. If those choices are in hindsight, how do you think about them now?

I feel that “most people’s” idea of a “conventional” choice or life path are outdated, often stupid, unthinking, tradition fallacy and as a consequence almost entirely wrong. All of my life choices are somewhat unconventional because I actually thought about them.

The outdatedness of many conventions (and conventional thinking) seems especially damning. We do live in a different world, and old patterns don’t always continue to work.

To the extent that the different world is unsustainable, it will pass away, and the enduring patterns will reveal themselves again. Very little new arises which is good. We wish to believe otherwise so that we can be superior to those who came before.

My parent(s) passed on the same knowledge that their parents gave them, even though it didn’t work for them. No self-reflection. Oh and raised me in a cult. Distrusting adults by default has served me very well. How people know what they know is probably why I’m into philosophy!

The next generation also distrusts us. This is modernity, in which tradition, passing on and accumulating wisdom over generations, feels impossible for many. I'm not saying you should have blindly followed your parents' traditions. I didn't. But it's a shame we couldn't, no?

Of course it’s a massive shame. Who would choose to live without elders? It’s horrible, hard and painful. I accept and regret that they are not up to the task of giving advice in this changing world. But I still judge them for it, the consequences of it.
