There's some kind of awful toxoplasmosis life cycle thing going on with trauma and ideology. Trauma begets ideologies to make sense of it, and those ideologies form communities in which everyone is actually actively reinforcing each other's trauma, I think in several ways. Oof.

This is a very good inquiry to double click on. I often say that the culture wars need a psychotherapist.

Awesome! I think this kind of work is badly needed. Shamans all day erry day.

I always wonder what sort of context or container (ritual?) would be appropriate for this kind of work—we have some folks with the ideas and abilities to mediate, but it’s hard to connect that to a space where people are willing to learn and reflect.

The problem is something like, too much freedom of association allows you to spend it all running away from your problems. At some point people have to hit rock bottom and then they need to take the step of noticing that they need to do something else.

I believe I create the context. My cult growing up used to say “in the world but not of the world”. I’m in those lefty circles but I provide a quiet, consistent dissenting voice. Then when people are ready to de-radicalise they have someone they can talk to.

I do wonder if I should be doing more to mediate between the two sides of the culture war though.
