Surprisingly, society literally being fire actually seems to be a great way to provide people with a sense of meaning. ("A Paradise Built in Hell" by Rebecca Solnit is a good book about this phenomenon)

Having something to fight/struggle against seems to be the most reliable source of meaning. Sometimes I think a lot of the problem of modern society is that the things we'd naturally struggle against are too abstract, so we have to invent enemies.
