I wouldn't rule that out from uh... some of the people who say that, but in general it *is* interesting as a feature of reading old books. e.g. I read Bertrand Russell's "Marriage and Morals" recently and what from a modern point of view is a huge opinion clash gave me whiplash

It veers wildly between opinions that would be considered wildly progressive even today to moderate sexism and massive racism. There's the bit where he's saying "Eugenics is super popular, but eugenicists amirite? Obviously eugenics is terrible... if you do it to white people."

And there's still a lot of good content in there that was useful to read, and it was an interesting perspective, but it's very much a different sort of feeling where you kinda have to fight the author every step of the way if you want to come away with a good experience of it.

(Side note: Bertrand Russel became much less racist later in life)

It's a pretty good book. I don't feel it's likely to cause belief revision in any of the directions I would object to because it's all so casual. The main argument is solid, but there's very clearly an unexamined underlying world view that yes of course that's how things are.

I think one of the problems with reading older books though is that often the things they're arguing against are either no longer relevant or their arguments are very much in the water and so seem obvious.

I heart Bertrand Russel. I like to think about just how subversive it was for him to publicly state his opinions in *1934*! Some of which we still haven’t achieved like 20hr work week and community crèches etc. Agreed also on the whiplash of “eugenics lol”. Super fun to read tho
