I'm currently rereading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (which I do like despite its flaws). It's possibly unique in the experience of wanting to grab the protagonist by the shoulders and shake him while shouting "INTERSUBJECTIVE! THE WORD YOU WANT IS INTERSUBJECTIVE!"
Yes, I’m using “interactive”, but about the same idea!
I think it's not quite the same thing - your usage of interactive is something that exists in the connection between an object and an observer, while intersubjective is shared subjectivity between two observers.
I tried to read that when I was 15 and failed. Should give it another go
I don't know if you'd like it or not. It's interesting, and good, but extremely flawed. A lot of people find it life changing because it's their first encounter with a lot of philosophy of science (and some other philosophy), but overlook how much of a cautionary tale it is.
“The parts about motorcycle maintenance aren’t accurate either” —Ngak’chang Rinpoche, my Buddhist teacher, who kept several old Vincents and Triumphs running
The philosophy of science bits aren't bad, in fairness. I could pick holes in them, but they're better than most popular representations of the same.
It's definitely better regarded as an interesting artifact, and maybe something to use as a starting point for thinking about a subject, than as a text to actually learn things from.
I was impressed how far the author got considering this was pre-Kegan. Poor guy.
