What are some books that you find yourself regularly recommending to a wide variety of people?
Why do people like The Name of the Wind? I find the writing and most of the ideas mediocre, the main character a massive Mary Sue who’s deeply annoying and the whole thing is too long, not worth it for the few original/fun ideas and scenes.

I think the thing about The Name of the Wind is that it does the things that SFF normally does well very well and the things that SFF normally does badly very badly. So if your tastes are aligned with the broader genre, it's a great book, if they're not, it's terrible.

(I'm basically with you in disliking it, but I think I read it when my tastes were mid-transition from liking that sort of thing to wanting something else from my fiction, so it's not hard for me to model what loving it would look like)

Ah, interesting. Makes sense, but that is not a mode of appeal that would have occurred to me, mostly because I feel like I'm awash in books like that and actively have to filter them out.
