It's really weird that "popular things are good, actually" is an unpopular opinion.
Feels adjacent to stereotypes - everyone wants to disregard them or kick against them but they only appeared because at one time it was true for majority of <category>

I think that's not necessarily how stereotypes evolve. Stereotypes (roughly) arise when it would be useful to believe them, which isn't the same as saying that it's true to believe them, though there's definitely overlap.

The two tend to separate when there's a power gradient, because if you have power over a group then they have relatively little ability to push back on negative stereotypes you hold about them, so that stereotype has low cost to you even if wrong, so only needs small benefit.
