What recurring conversation patterns annoy or bother you that you wish you had a socially acceptable way of fixing?

It's more a debating pattern than normal conversation, I guess, but putting forward arguments that aren't the central reason you believe something first, knowing that if they are refuted your mind won't be changed.

In fairness I'm not sure people actually have central reasons they believe something, or that when they do they know what they are.

Best idea I have so far is reframing it away from an argument between members of different tribes and toward a collaborative search for mutual understanding, if not agreement. I know that sounds hopelessly utopian.

Less wrong types have this but you still get to disagree - "adversarial collaboration".
