LISTEN: The largest academic strike in U.S. history ended last month with a landmark agreement between and graduate student teaching assistants and graduate student researchers. What might it mean for students and colleges outside of the UC?

A historic win for academia and union organization. Reflecting on all the hard work so many have put into this strike and I’m incredibly proud to have been a part of it. Solidarity, forever ✊🏽

It’s been a long road, up against an employer that tried for decades to keep us from having a union. Today, Student Researchers have a first contract — and thousands of coworkers ready to enforce our new rights and keep fighting for each other. #FairUCnow

What a fantastic win. This strike has been one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. Our contracts we won will be life changing for myself and many others. Extremely grateful for the hard work everyone has put in and for the friends I made on the picket line.

Fighting for a union in grad school, all I wanted so desperately was a grievance procedure. To see grad workers at UC win some of the strongest workplace protections in addition to the money and benefits in this strike… I am so damn proud to fight w/

An important perspective from four international workers on the SRU and UAW2865 who have been fighting a long battle for NRST remission, and share a vision to continue this fight beyond this contract.
We started organizing with our union in 2019, when the UC tried to hike Non Residential Supplemental Tuition (NRST) for international students, and we successfully stopped them from doing so for graduate student workers. We then helped build the statewide international student committee, fighting against travel bans and other xenophobic policies during the pandemic, and successfully won extensions to the 3-year waiver for post-candidacy international Ph.D. students who had their progress toward their degree delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
These organizing efforts, along with learning about the experiences of international workers who are burdened by NRST, led us to advocate to center NRST as part of our contract demands in this bargaining cycle. We knew that this would be an uphill battle from the beginning. Read more here:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wYwYWqzPW7q6VLPgk3qLxnJjIoR7VWV5jrwAvQONYfo/edit?usp=sharing
Codifying existing remission policies is a monumental step in building parity for international graduate workers. It will allow us to enforce these remissions, and allow us to file and win grievances for other past practices, ensuring continuation of remission policies. We understand that this win on the NRST front is limited, and falls short of our initial bargaining demands. However, this is nonetheless a victory that UC massively resisted at the bargaining table. After verbally agreeing, they attempted to take this provision out of the final written mediated proposals, and we had to insist it be included. Getting this language into the final deal is a significant victory because it will lay down the groundwork for our next fight in two years’ time, where we can demand for an extension of this protection, just like how we moved from partial campus fee remissions to full campus fee remissions in this bargaining cycle. after the largest academic worker strike in US history, UC’s grad student workers reached an incredible tentative agreement. once we ratify, with a 57% base wage increase, 8 week parental/medical pto, and more, this contract will change lives + set new precedents across academia.

Our unions, UAW 2865 and SRU-UAW just secured a BILLION dollar package by TAing a proposal from UC. As a direct result of our strike power, we forced President Drake to make major concessions!!! These include: (1/5)
