"And I can definitely say that our members are paying attention to what UC academic workers have been able to achieve, and are taking a lot of information from it.” - Sam Sumpter, president of the UW academic worker union, UAW 4121
“I can’t say for sure whether admin made that proposal because of the UC strike, but we certainly don’t think it was a coincidence.” - Sam Sumpter, UAW 4121 president
A historic win for academia and union organization. Reflecting on all the hard work so many have put into this strike and I’m incredibly proud to have been a part of it. Solidarity, forever ✊🏽

It’s been a long road, up against an employer that tried for decades to keep us from having a union. Today, Student Researchers have a first contract — and thousands of coworkers ready to enforce our new rights and keep fighting for each other. #FairUCnow
On Monday, May 24th, Student Researchers from across the University of California system gathered in Oakland to deliver over 10,000 signed union authorization cards to the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB). Watch the video of the action below! #solidarity#ucsru#sruuaw
Our union has more members than ever. People are more engaged than ever. We’ve all learned so much and made so many connections. This contract is incredible, and the next one will be better than we ever could have imagined.
What a fantastic win. This strike has been one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. Our contracts we won will be life changing for myself and many others. Extremely grateful for the hard work everyone has put in and for the friends I made on the picket line.

Fighting for a union in grad school, all I wanted so desperately was a grievance procedure. To see grad workers at UC win some of the strongest workplace protections in addition to the money and benefits in this strike… I am so damn proud to fight w/

I struggle to take strong public positions because because I worry about ppl not liking me over where I land, but I wanted to share that I am happily voting YES to ratify the academic worker contracts at UC 🧵
(1/7) I’ve been seeing some arguments about how the ASE and SRU wage structures are creating a “two-tier” wage system, but this is historically not what a two-tier system is in labor agreements. A thread:
UC Labor Relations has been falsely claiming that the tentative agreements mean the strike is over. This is wrong. The strike continues until agreements are ratified.
You can report any retaliation from the UC via this form: https://uc-uaw.jotform.com/223477610516960
An important perspective from four international workers on the SRU and UAW2865 who have been fighting a long battle for NRST remission, and share a vision to continue this fight beyond this contract.
Our contract ratification votes began this morning and will end on Friday at 5pm. Workers are having important debates about ratification. The the majority of elected leadership of both SRU & UAW 2865 recommend a yes vote, while others oppose. Read the arguments for both below.
Last night, the SRU-UAW and UAW 2865 Bargaining Teams voted to tentatively agree to new contracts for ASEs and Student Researchers. The teams, including myself personally, recommend you vote YES to ratify both agreements. The vote begins on Monday, 8AM. My feelings below. 1/n
after the largest academic worker strike in US history, UC’s grad student workers reached an incredible tentative agreement. once we ratify, with a 57% base wage increase, 8 week parental/medical pto, and more, this contract will change lives + set new precedents across academia.
Our unions, UAW 2865 and SRU-UAW just secured a BILLION dollar package by TAing a proposal from UC. As a direct result of our strike power, we forced President Drake to make major concessions!!! These include: (1/5)
