    Apparently a non-trivial number of systems are experiencing bugs. A common Y2K "fix" just postponed things by 20 years, interpreting 00-19 as the 2000s and 20-99 as the 1900s. 20 years is now up, some of those systems are still in use, and they think it's 1920. Oooops.

    To clarify, no children died in traffic anywhere in Norway (pop. 5,3 million) in 2019. That’s a first, at least since WW2. Also, as the graph shows, there was a single lethal crash where a car driver hit a railing at a down town light rail station. That is still one too many.

    mathematicians mostly don't work on anything remotely useful and they rely on nobody else understanding what they do to keep this up; schools tolerate this b/c prestige + somebody needs to teach and TA calculus

    I agree with the growing sentiment that software is becoming more and more complex. It's also becoming more and more about amassing a large amount of tool specific trivia and less about fundamental knowledge. This trivia changes fast, so knowledge is worth much less.
