In May of 2018, Texas Department of Public Safety provided the Texas Secretary of State's office with a list of everyone 18+ who said they were a non-citizen when they got a driver's license. In August, the governor made an urgent request they do so again.pic.twitter.com/DoWqud8xjX

There was a complication. The SoS office wanted more information than they got in May. Specifically, they wanted immigration identifiers -- such as an alien number -- they could run through a DHS database to identify non-citizens.pic.twitter.com/vrR3mMTIAr

That was August. By January, the SoS' office abandoned its efforts to use the DHS database. It's not clear why. Instead it just went with comparing people who got driver's licenses as non-citizens to the voter rolls.

An Abbott spokesman denied the governor had any role at all in the January effort. “This is patently false. Neither the Governor, nor the Governor’s office had spoken with dps until after the issue surfaced. No one speaks for the Governor’s office, but the Governor’s office.”
