I know published a book of essays on the subject of magic systems and has worked with the conception of the Weave a lot. What do you think? Can magic systems be explained with internal consistency?

For example? What exactly is a caster doing when they cast invisibility? Fireball? Detect magic? And can the explanation of those all fit the same explaination of how magic works?

Is it feasible to have an internally consistent understanding of how magic works in a game? Or are there just too many varied effects for a generalized conception to be consistent?

Oh snap...Steve (and mad about it) was told to follow them into the fire cell, which is in anti-magic. Control gem stopped working, so now their dealing with killer traps and a pissed off slaad at the same time!

Have my players used the control gem to force a grey slaad to follow their orders in the Tomb of the Nine Gods? Yes. But the more important fact is that they named him “Steve (and mad about it)”.
