I have not used the new MacBook Pro but I get this sense that Apple is trying to do w/ hardware that software does so much better.

The basic interaction model for PCs is you watch the screen while using the keyboard blindly. Touchbar doesn't work blindly.

Perhaps we are waiting for the killer apps. It's too early to tell. But I am sure they did a lot of user research.
