Seattle Public Library’s Tweets

Rumor has it, we'll lose our legacy blue check tomorrow. That means there will be nothing left to stop you from impersonating us and aggressively telling your followers to get a Library card 😱

Please be patient as our newest manager is getting off to a squirrely start at our Northeast Branch. We're beginning to suspect we had a misunderstanding about their extensive experience in branch management.

Why? Because she’s brought a ludicrously capacious bag. What’s even in there, huh? Flat shoes for the subway? Her lunch pail? I mean, Greg, it’s monstrous. It’s gargantuan. You could take it camping. You could slide it across the floor after a bank job.
A ludicrously capacious canvas tote with a cartoon Library card on the side. Text reads, "Let's get a library card" and below "www.spl.org" What's even in there? All your 50 holds, probably.

“I’m saying all you need to do is fill out a short application. This card gives you access to a ton of stuff. Not just books. I'm talking movies, shows, music. You'll never pay to read the news again. And they just give it to you for free if you live, work or go to school there.”

Recognize this scene? On August 17, 1907, a group of farmers met with their produce wagons at Pike Place & sold out of their goods by lunch time, setting the stage for the market we know today. Happy 115th birthday ! This postcard shows an early market scene.
Black and white photo of farmers with their carts. There is a large crowd of people buying products directly from the farmers.
In the early 1900's, thousands of farmers, including many Italian, German, Chinese, Japanese and Filipinos supplied produce to the city from far and wide. The public market at Pike Place was revolutionary in changing the previous system requiring farmers to sell their produce through a middleman who then charged shoppers greatly inflated prices. The market was so popular on its first day that farmers could not meet the demands of the crowds of gathered shoppers and quickly sold out.

Well, that didn't last long. As our "official" designation vanishes and our @Twitter blue check mark is probably next to go, a quick note on best ways to confirm the identity of government Twitter accounts around you.

Many of you are asking why we would allow this booking, citing the author’s views on abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, and more. We understand these questions. We are committed to intellectual freedom, even when viewpoints expressed do not align with our values.

We oppose censorship in all forms. Just this week, we launched Books Unbanned to ensure teens and young adults have access to materials that are banned in communities where the right to read is being threatened.
