This is my new project, Hest. • A drawing tool with visual programming features. • Everything is both code and data. • Execution happens in time and space. • You control time. Here it is doing "shitty math" — where your operators are little boxes.

The Future of Coding Podcast is back, featuring our first interview of 2020 — Devine Lu Linvega () We talked for over 3 hours, so this is going to be a 2-parter. Today it's context: philosophy, toolmaking, low-power computing. Next time: Orca.

Turns out, wrote a really beautiful blog post about this exact idea back in 2016. I think he's closer to the essence of the matter than any of the hot takes circulating yesterday.

Seems like we need to treat some software art as a performance, not an artifact. As theatre, not sculpture. If we want the work to survive, we should document it like a play — as a set of instructions to recreate the meaning, not the identical form.

Hey all you artists working in the digital medium: I am a software developer currently employed at an art museum, and we frequently put digital art in our galleries. Some of it is new. Some of it is decades old now. I have some opinions…

Something about working for a company that makes physical simulators, walking past piles of color-coded cables and stacks of Pelican cases, makes me want to crawl around poking things inside my code as it runs. VR exists, sure, but look at those fucking buttons and couplers!

I would like to travel back in time and tell Marx that we programmers appropriated the means of production and then offered the bourgeoisie to work for free for them. Just to see his face.

Love that suddenly appeared in my YouTube subscription feed. It feels like 20 years now that I’ve been dreaming of games with truly open-ended narratives, and it’s heartening that people like Max are actually building that dream.

Join us at the PPIG 2020 workshop hosted by in Toronto to explore the margins of programming. Who has agency to participate in computational creativity? What practices, theories, people, and technologies have been overlooked?

"Lisp on the Left" — what we should totally call the emerging field of procedural graphics editors that do direct manipulation plus code generation. Think Ronin, or Sketch-n-Sketch.

TFW you double check that -0 actually equals 0 in JavaScript because, like... Wait, did you see that? In the mirror, just now? I could have sworn I saw something. Looked like... ... Must have been nothing, sorry.

I would like to see more people explore “tools that embrace the broken and find the good in it” as a counterculture to the mainstream “tools that make the broken impossible”

After years of mystery, I've finally written an article on the origin story and rationale of my Lucidity project: (And there's a new video illustrating more realistic usecases than I've shown previously)

Thinking of all the "computers haven't improved in X years" hot takes... ...while I edit this 5K@60 ProRes 4444 + alpha footage, which is about 500 MB per second, in realtime... ...using software that never requires me to remember to save and has never once lost my work.

Art is full of examples of the bounty from flawed mental models. But you can find them in science, too. This is a bit of abstraction leakage, a result that falls outside the behaviour expected from metronomes by their designers and users:

    • Freelensing, or "lens whacking", is a technique where the lens is unscrewed from the camera and loosely held in place, so that light can leak in from the sides and the focus is uneven across the image, creating beautifully surreal results
