  1. I’m not certain that Brussels and key EU capitals fully see the strategic significance of Ericsson and Nokia in this time of geotechnological competition. They sometimes look stuck in the steel age.

twitter, does anyone have a favorite strategy for teaching thermodynamics? I feel like a majority of the time we either look up a bunch of constants in a table or slog through tedious algebra (I guess twitter could weigh in too)

  3. Here is a short and very accessible explanation of what an exciting-polariton is. Because of the matter-light hybrid nature, they both interact non-negligibly and have very small effective mass. Polariton condensates have some very interesting and unintuitive properties.

  4. This is the most important and devastating thing to read today. It is well worth reading through, but you will need a box of tissues and/or some you love to hug tightly. TW: Mental health, suicide

  5. Really cool optical illusion I had not seen before! 😃

  6. That isn’t to say there aren’t problems with the current system, some of which public peer review might (partially) address, but I think the cure might be worse than the disease in this case.

  7. I am open to changing my mind about it, but I don’t think making peer review public is a good idea. This thread nicely spells out why.

The names of 100 prisoners are put in 100 boxes. One at a time, privately, each prisoner opens and closes 50 boxes. They are set free if *everyone* finds their own name. Strategy can be discussed beforehand, but otherwise there's no communication. What's the best strategy? 1/23

I'm sympathetic to some of 's critique of modern physics, and it's true that without experimental data, reconciling quantum theory with gravity is exceedingly difficult. But the black hole information paradox is one of the best clues we have and it's a theoretical one. 1/n

  10. All of this is anecdotal, of course, and memory hardly qualifies as reliable observation. Still, as a personal experience, it is tangible enough. And yes, I do feel a sense of loss when I think about it. 4/4

  11. My birthday is in mid-November. I always considered myself born in winter – in fact we used to say that the first real snow would come on my birthday. It was roughly true. Now most winters hardly have snow before Christmas. 3/4

  12. Sure, one outlier proves nothing – and this is an outlier even now – but winters have gotten noticeably warmer since my childhood. Occasional mild days were not unusual, but in general December through February would have full snow cover and temps consistently below freezing. 2/4

  13. Can confirm. I talked to family in the area where I grew up in south-central Sweden (~200km north of Stockholm) the other day. There’s been hardly any snow at all this winter and temps well above freezing most of January. This would be unthinkable when I grew up. 1/4

To all my British friends, I share your pain and whatever happens politically you remain our European sisters and brothers. It's an unbreakable bond has been forged by centuries of European cultural, economic and political exchanges. 🇪🇺🇬🇧

  15. It is the spirit that flowed forth from this event that shaped the generation that came of age in the 1990's and the first years of the new millennium. A generation that in its youth looked out over the promise of a united and open Europe.

  16. The reunification of Germany and the idea of a united Europe seem to me inextricably linked, brought about by the same spirit and to a large extent by the same people. Today seems a fitting day to re-experience this concert.

  17. There can be no other music today. Of all the many fine performances, the one that speaks to me most strongly on this day is this: Berlin, December 1989: "Ode to Joy, a poem that sings exultantly of the brotherhood of men: 'Alle Menschen werden Brüder'".

For all of us working with organic solvents - be careful! We talk about the dangers of inhalation, ingestion etc. but never about injection. These images are from only 1-2 drops of dichloromethane! And remember nitrile gloves don't stop a syringe!

It did take time! Probably spent five or 10 minutes drawing and labeling different parts of the diagram, and erasing mistakes, and even with that, you can probably still spot a few errors. I hope the students liked the slow process as much as I did. It was fun but scary

*this* is exactly the reason I prefer teaching with a board (chalk or marker). It forces me to slow down when teaching, and I am convinced that my classes are better for it.
