Sometimes it's not necessarily a surprise when entertainment icons of a certain age die, yet it still comes as an emotional gut-punch when it actually happens. Actor Christopher Plummer is a prime example.

One of the benefits of this year's virtual was that everyone was actually watching and talking about the movies rather than researching and worrying about which parties on Main Street they might be missing.

HIVE, depicting a sliver of the aftermath of the war in Kosovo, is one of those movies you see at that sticks with you for years. So subtle. So quiet. So moving. So well told by Blerta Basholli. It leaves an impression.

New Frontiers at truly mimics real life. Bumped into in a chat group. Before I could say hello he saw someone's avatar pass by and said he had to run off to speak with them. Just like when we're in Park City. (I'm sure Eric knows I'm joking to make my point.)

I'm sure some will fault the drama MASS for being too frustrating or too talky or being too much like a play. But for me the movie simply worked on an emotional level. Great performances from Jason Isaacs, Martha Plimpton, Ann Dowd and Reed Birney.

Ninja Thyberg's PLEASURE is sure to make a splash and stir up as much buzz as one might expect of a movie set in the porn industry. Hopefully its subject matter won't overshadow a confident debut for both the director and lead actress, Sofia Kappel.

Watching a parade of random people review profiles on dating apps while talking about their love lives should not be nearly as intriguing as Pacho Velez's documentary SEARCHERS. It slowly ensnares you the longer you watch.

I'm a sucker for good docs like Debbie Lum's TRY HARDER about an SF high school of over-achieving AP machines with 1600 SAT scores trying to get into Ivy League universities. Made me glad to have already finished college and not have to apply myself.
