Takes me back. Learned this trick as a teenager and was very impressed with the universe.

I've introduced this to a couple of my friends now and evidently it's not just me who finds it fascinating! This is a gamified introduction to the Lean interactive theorem prover (and the Peano natural numbers). A novel perspective on formal math!

Of course, musicians could improvise, but the transmission and elaboration of improvisations was limited by geography and human memory. Could the pre-recording world have produced the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Can't Stop" or Macklemore's "Downtown"?

Listening to Rolling Stones "Paint it Black" I realized that the deeply idiosyncratic vocal styles and rhythms of modern music are impossible without recording technology, since they cannot be captured in formal notation (e.g. classical symphonies maxed out then-current tech)

If nothing seems obviously good, it might be because you have a gut-level fear of negative side effects (embarrassing yourself, wasting time). This is *defensive thinking* manifest! Try offensive thinking CBT ;)

When you feel down, ask yourself: what is one good thing I could do for present self or future self right now? Invariably one will come to mind--finding one good thing is far easier than optimizing over good things. Then just do it!

Offensive thinking: "In a street fight, never take a step backwards, unless it is to run for your life." Defensive thinking: "Think constantly about avoiding injury to yourself or others; never get into a street fight." Which one sounds like the more fun way to live?

This is very interesting, especially the part about how repairs are pervasive. Consistency checks are more practical than planning :) I've often done ethnomethodological analyses on my own attempts at "practical action" without realizing it was a field!

I really should introduce this post with a pithy one-liner, but I connected with it in so many places I find myself unable to ;)

The bullshit asimmetry: the amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it.

The Taiwanese magnate Terry Gou and the Turco-Mongol emperor Timur (1336-1405) both drew inspiration from Genghis Khan's conquests. Timur's campaigns caused the deaths of 17 million people. Gou's ruthless business expansions produced 1 billion+ iPhones. ?

Never mind, I figured it out. The examples rely on older dependencies which naturally you updated in lens-simple. Running them from the original Ekmett lens source works. :)

Any help would be very much appreciated. By the way, I'm a student at the University of Washington studying computer science and physics. Cheers! Spencer

Working on what importantism is from a foundations-of-personal-knowledge perspective... doesn't feel a lot like either variant of low-hanging fruit until you apply it 🤔
