That feeling when you are a long time software guy, assuming computers are binary at the core (+ and - voltage), learning about the "tri state" of logic circuits. (it's when a circuit is disconnected aka high impedance)

Ah yes, quite the change from 0/1, when you go to FPGA world that's one way to disconnect circuitry from each other :)

I though FPGAs did not physically have tri-state buses, they were emulated.

Hmm, at least on one occasion I used ‘z’ to disconnect and float some pins, so that was all trickery apparently :-) I wonder how they do the emulation then.
