So why would a surviving Confederacy retain slavery? Because white supremacy.

Slavery in the South wasn't about economics. It probably started that way, and worked for wealthy landowners, but overall, it hurt.

OK, since my mentions are full of "slavery would never have survived even if the Confederacy won!" stans (why?), here is a counterargument.

We need MORE hidden figures and fewer "What if we could still keep you as slaves?" More "I didn't know that..." and fewer "what if fuckery"

Instead of "What if you didn't enslave us at all?" a tacit defense of status quo comes from a story saying "Slavery could've lasted longer!"

Some of this "what if the world was worse?" in the most popular alternate history may be subconscious defense of the world as we know it.
