What is more important? Your love or the violence and harm these cultures have caused? And what exactly is not being critical and signaling that you are not a white supremacist so complicated to do? The rhetoric of “love” was what GG used to justify violence.

The rhetoric of “love” was what the sad puppies used to go after @nkjemisin in #RaceFail. So please, using “ love” only follows exactly the logic of the toxic swarms. Who the hell are you going to harm by continuing w/out clear antiracist, feminist, LGBTQIA affirming message?

And please, multiple angles in this arena is both sides BS. There is no multiple angles to GG, toxic misogyny, antiracism, and the horrors of the alt-right. Multiple angles is complicity to violence and dehumanization. This is not a theoretical issue. Ppl have been hurt.

In consideration of the colleagues tagged in this thread, and for those just arriving, let me be extremely clear: in my earlier tweet, the ‘many angles and focuses’ referred to the subfields & interdisciplinary approaches of games studies. It did not refer to GG, “2-sides” etc.

As my critique was clear about what area I had issues with, how is this response then a defense of the frames of this series. Subfields and interdisciplinary approaches in gaming always should address and ground issues of race, gender, sexuality, disability etc.

It was not a response to your critique. It was a clarification on my previous tweet to ensure my reference to multiple focuses was not misinterpreted or misrepresented.

So then what exactly is the point here? Because the intro. to the series is basically a big old white space for white supremacists to hang out. And really, also signals incredibly white gamer scholarship which lots of games studies folks have fought for years.

Really, we are quoting and using AOC as a shield? Also we've discussed this already. @Lollardfish wrote an article already: https://psmag.com/education/nazis-love-taylor-swift-and-also-the-crusades …

Also, shall we here from the video game scholars on this one @edmondchang @NazcaTheMad @drdavidjleonard @sparklebliss @KishonnaGray who have already written, explained, written again to be intentional and clear about the antiracism, feminism, LGBTQIA, and disability frames.

If we love games, we should be able to take them seriously which means engaging critically with them as a cultural form. We cannot keep acting like the medium is not being leveraged to cause real harm. Conveniently, I just wrote a blog post about this.http://www.sparklebliss.com/something-has-happened/ …

"Games are neat and not all bad" is not a thing that needs saying. We would not accept this as a frame for inquiry into any other medium. It is like how people delight in telling me they don't play games. Like, ok? Do you tell lit profs you don't read books? Games are ancient.

I thought there was a missing "not" in there... :) I have only been on the edges of these things (hello: life) but the necessary push to challenge systemic & violent BS is not the opposite of play, entertainment, fandom, fun...rather it should be an integral part of all of it!
