Why does the tech world seem to insist that a SQL RDBMS is the "right tool" for all data storage? So many developers just reach for SQL without thinking about whether it's even needed?

Interesting... part of the issue I think comes down to understanding which type of data modelling to use and which data store to use for that type of modelling. RDBMS are the "swiss army knife" of data stores. NoSQL stores should be used for what they are useful for.
