Why does the tech world seem to insist that a SQL RDBMS is the "right tool" for all data storage? So many developers just reach for SQL without thinking about whether it's even needed?

I wonder if the problem with NoSQL was more to do with the management of NoSQL servers, than it was to do with the underlying principles?

I don't think so at all. I heard plenty of tales about single server or hosted NoSQL setups with issues. Mostly around data modeling. It feels easy to paint yourself in a corner with NoSQL

Prime example from the era I am referring tohttp://www.sarahmei.com/blog/2013/11/11/why-you-should-never-use-mongodb/ …

Interesting... part of the issue I think comes down to understanding which type of data modelling to use and which data store to use for that type of modelling. RDBMS are the "swiss army knife" of data stores. NoSQL stores should be used for what they are useful for.

It all comes down to "know your tools"
