The problem with careers is I have no idea how to connect the dots. My wife and I 100% will start a company someday, but I'm unclear what the path to that, etc. What should I be doing at 32? Seems like moving towards improving EQ skills more important than coding skills.

Thanks for the contacts. Would not mind having a chat with any of the mentioned folks. I'm all ears as I really have no idea where to begin.

The reality is I am almost certainly rationalizing not doing something because I am scared of failing and screwing up and harming my family where as I can easily go out and get a high paying job and ensure their comfort.

Hi Dan, happy to chat about the apples of consulting vs the oranges of employment sometime. My boilerplate advice is thus: pick an hourly rate, bullet list 5 things you excel at, email that to folks like Brad and Jim along with a form W-9 for an LLC, also setup PayPal and Square.

If you don’t have a Wisconsin LLC set up, do that. It’s pretty easy on the DFI website. You will be a disregarded entity on your taxes, but get a separate ein/tin anyway so it’s not on your social security number. It’ll cost you about $200 to set up and annually thereafter.

These steps alone make you “easy to contract” and the next most important thing after that is proving you’re worth the ask. None of it is a big commitment yet, you can still just get a job any time and even do both unless they have a full commitment clause.
