Still looking for a good way of handling auth tokens with GraphQL and Go. Parsing it in a middleware and then attaching it to context seems smelly.

      why does it seem smelly?

Because I don't think context would be the right place to store it? It gets hidden in the request and makes it harder to do more flexible case handling.

Like, in the context of GraphQL, if the user passes an invalid token, it should error out. But, you will have that middleware at the level of a single endpoint and it becomes less flexible.

Like, I may want to have unauthenticated endpoints and let users not have a UserID. Maybe I could just check if it's blank and continue as normal for unauthenticated users and check for it in a resolver? 🤔

This is what I do. Resolver checks for existence/type of auth token. Middleware only responsible for parse/validate

Aha. And only throw an error if it's an invalid token? And skip validity checks if the token is blank?

yep! I resolve the token to a more complete user object with some permission fields and check against those

I see, I see, I see. I like this approach a lot, actually. You may be onto something.
