There will be niches that will eek out an existence for the next 30 years ... but for the majority, this has happened / is happening.

Oh, and FaaS doesn’t replace PaaS, which doesn’t replace CaaS, which doesn’t replace IaaS etc... all will have their place.

What we now have are more options to do the right thing in the right place, and no single one is the answer to everything...

Due to economics, finite limits by physics and the "last of the land", i.e governance & regulations I believe the will be as need for on

Premise cloud connected infra for many industries. It will get less and less and / or specialized for edge cases while mostly connected /2

IMHO no "one size fits all", where fits the use case FaaS provides productivity/low-cost. IaaS will tend towards "niche" == costly.

And yes, FaaS (Eg.Lambda) does increase vendor lock-in, but most times I want productivity and speed to market and will take the risk.

👍 Lock-in is also a spectrum. The people who bring this up are often imagining "multi year Oracle contract". That's not Lambda

Lock-in is all about the cost/effort to leave/move your app and data to a different platform/vendor. Length of contract not so important.

gah I was not clear. Was using that one aspect to represent the whole situation. Lock-in of a decade ago was terrible in all kinds of ways.

True - certain historical vendors have given "lock-in" a bad name... ;-)
