AWS shouldn't have used Amazon Linux as the base OS for Lambda. Too old, obscure and hard to get apps/libs for. Ubuntu or Debian would've been a much better choice. Google Cloud Functions gets this right (Ubuntu 18.04)

i wonder if cloudflare gets this righter by shipping v8 and avoiding OS curation altogether.

Hmmm? How would I run my image processing / machine learning / native compilation on CloudFlare? I'd need everything to be in JS, right?

I'm thinking outside the simple JS web app box here – using Lambda (or whatever) for *everything*

If everything I needed was already in JS, then yeah, definitely less of an issue (but then I wouldn't have an issue with the OS that Amazon chose for Lambda – assuming I could fit all my JS within the disk limits!)

Sounds like the solution is to rewrite everything in JS
