Noticing the React ecosystem took in around nearly 8MM in seed funding in the past week between two companies (Prisma and Gatsby). Venture capital growing bullish on the future of open source web tech.

I'm in "camp indifferent about business models. VC way too much media hyperbole. A business model is not an evil thing or a good thing. Diff ones have diff tradeoffs. Good actors and bad. Just like bootstrapping. /shrug

Also think some folks confused my 'noticing' with 'omg this is a celebratory moment'. It is validation for the ecosystem which is nice but not really a thing to laud or celebrate per se. An indicator. One signal among many.

Tho it is true capital can distort. Undeniable that npm was not going in a good direction before they moved to hybridize it with a privately held for-profit model. Could that have happened without that capital? Probably not. Tho that doesn't mean it had to come from investors.

when O/S get's funding typically something dies and something grows, but it is a re-affirming action that people are onto "the right thing" if they were using the tech prior to this

yes exactly! it's usually positive imo. not to get all "trickle down" but at least some portion of that capital goes back into maintaining the software. last gen of tools that comes to mind was just about anything in the 'big data' reality…lots of good (and lots of roadkill!)
