I suspect practice in choosing who to cut to, offering quick takes, juggling various handoffs/call-outs/countdowns, etc is valuable - especially but not exclusively if some of the developments they simulate come to pass... now very different than old in-studio(s) reporting night!

Wasn't this the New Yorker though? For TV rehearsing with actors makes sense, for print journalism it sounds worse than just discussing possible outcomes.
