In middle school I let out my confused emotions in mosh pits and alone in my room listening to The Ataris. The most hostile I ever got was screaming out the lyrics "Why do I never seem to learn that love is WRONG and girls are FUCKING EVIL!"
I just had a revelation about this #incel ("involuntary celibate") concept that has been growing. I was cleaning and listening to the Smiths first album and remembering how helpful that music was growing up. What is the music for awkward depressed teens these days?

This is coming from a place that is actually pretty serious. There has always been popular music that has been helpful for this shit. The 90's had Weezer, Blink-182, and the rise of the emo scene. The early 2000's continued from there with Fallout Boy and MCR.

And that's starting from my experience. As I mentioned this revelation started with me listening to the Smiths, so I know it didn't start in the 90's. But I felt that the music that defined my emotional experience had a huge platform in MTV/TRL/etc.

I recognize I've become the old fart ignorant of counter examples to my observation. It feels like the void left by emo music has been filled w/ internet communities that perpetuate misguided beliefs without providing a cathartic release. So revenge fantasies become appealing.

I also recognize that today's popular music is giving people of color with different experience a platform they did not have, and I'm all for it. This is parallel to the men's rights/All Lives Matter situation of privileged people feeling oppressed bc of a leveling of the field.

I don't believe my experience was the "right" one that it needs to go back to. I just think this situation needs to be observed and understood. And I think adults need to recognize the lack kids are feeling and be informed in how they interact.
