should we go back to funding it like we used to? with shared pizza and hatred for our day jobs?
-
I actually think that mythology - of the pure, selfless hacker who rises above the corrupting influence of money - is part of the problem. It has become a dogma, a way to shut down uncomfortable questions of the underlying power dynamics of open-source.

Please expand on "unsustainable"?

The way OSS is funded is fine for its origjnal applications: learning, fun and research. But inadequate for its new role as the software guts of the Internet. Open-source is critical infrastructure now. We should fund it like roads. Volunteers and philanthropy are not enough.

Disagree. We at MSFT use some OSS and spend tons giving back. What we use, we try hard to support. Check out our contributions to Apache.

How much enterprise value have MSFT shareholders extracted from the collective labor of open-source maintainers? And what percentage of that value has been redistributed to actual maintainers? How about maintainers who are not MSFT employees?

All software is developed by those who have money or time so it will almost always be beneficial to Big Tech since they have an abundance of both. The only way to make it better, in my opinion, is continuing to lower the barrier to entry so that time no longer becomes an issue.
-
I think it’s fine that Big Tech benefits from open-source. It just means that, if you believe the current funding system is unsustainable, we can’t rely on Big Tech to fix it.

They started giving but arguably the amount is ridiculous compared to the value extracted. But it’s a start. It’s also new that open source projects can actually receive money in a transparent and legal way https://opencollective.com/google https://opencollective.com/fbopensource https://opencollective.com/airbnb

In my opinion, relying on donations too much is one way the current system is unsustainable.
