it helps to learn about how the pronunciation system works (what letters map to what sounds, four tones)

the tones give you some information in audio that isn't always there in writing. but I agree there's an added layer of difficulty

studying history has increasing marginal returns but only if you're studying things that overlap with previous knowledge
